Long, luscious hair has always been in style, and healthy hair is definitely going to be in this summer. I don’t know about you, but I’m ditching the extensions, the split ends, and the dry scalp, and going on a hair journey to get my hair summer ready. For all my girlies struggling to grow their hair, or who just want an extra boost of thickness and shine, The Glow Files has you covered with a guide to getting a full mermaid mane this summer!
Apply Organic Rosemary Oil
Rosemary oil has long been touted as a go-to for hair growth. This powerful oil can help stimulate blood flow and circulation to your scalp to wake up your hair follicles. Massaging rosemary into your scalp a couple of times a week can help encourage new hair growth and a healthier scalp. Rosemary oil is also antibacterial and antifungal, so it can help detox your scalp to keep it fresh and clean.
Don’t Forget B Vitamins
B vitamins are so important for healthy, strong hair. Although many foods including meat and fish have a a plethora of B vitamins in them, you’d be surprised how deficient some of us are in the essentials. With how overly processed food is these days, and how common digestive issues are in our society, many people aren’t properly digesting and absorbing all the nutrients we need from food. Vitamins B5, B6, and B12 are particularly important for hair growth, but taking a B complex supplement that has all of them included is important, so that you’re getting a balanced intake of them all. I opt for methylated versions of B vitamins that are more absorbable. Bee pollen and beef liver (nature’s multivitamins) are also good options as they naturally contain considerable amounts of B vitamins.
Try Horsetail Extract
Many popular hair-growth shampoos have this ingredient in them, but it’s really more beneficial when taken orally. Horsetail extract is high in silica which is a helpful mineral for healthy hair, skin, and nails. Silica also helps to displace several heavy metals in our bodies including aluminum, which can also impede proper hair growth.
Drink Nettle Tea
Nettle tea is rich in minerals that our hair loves and needs to thrive. It is also a nourishing tea for proper hormone balance and stress relief, which are also contributing factors to how hair grows.
Take Magnesium Glycinate
Magnesium is truly the beauty mineral in my book. It is responsible for so many functions, and out of all the different forms of magnesium out there; magnesium glycinate is by far my favorite. Taking magnesium helps with better stress management, better sleep, proper hormone balance, and it helps to promote circulation. These are all essential aspects to having healthy, strong hair, so magnesium is absolutely key. Stress also plays a big role in hair loss, and prolonged periods of stress can deplete magnesium levels.
More Protein, Protein, Protein
It’s no secret that we need protein to survive, but many of us are not getting anywhere near enough protein each day. When we’re barely getting enough to support the functions of our bodies, our hair (which is considered inessential in terms of survival) just ends up getting whatever is left over. If there is not enough protein to go around, hair can often become dry, brittle, weak, and eventually fall out. You want to aim to get around 80 to 120 grams of protein each day to support proper hair growth. I like to incorporate grass-fed red meats, organic chicken, pasture-raised eggs, and wild-caught fish.
Do a Detox Scalp Scrub
Whether from hair products, natural oils, or sweat, our hair follicles and scalp can easily get over-burdened with build-up and debris that sometimes an everyday shampoo can’t target. Giving your scalp a good scrub with a detox shampoo can really get into the build-up and clear out any stubborn gunk to deep-clean your scalp. As much as we want to keep the ends of our hair nice and hydrated to prevent split ends, we don’t want to neglect the health and importance of our scalps (since that is where hair grows to begin with).
Ditch the Heat
Try to opt for more heatless hairstyles to ease up on the breakage and potential hair damage that can be caused by hair straighteners, curling irons, and even blow dryers. Heatless curls and rollers are having a resurgence these days, so trying out these options can be a big help when trying to grow longer and healthier hair. When using heat on hair, you can mitigate some of the damage by using a good heat protectant beforehand.
Sleep on a Silk Pillowcase
Silk pillowcases aren’t just hype – they really do make a difference when it comes to preventing unnecessary breakage and damage to hair overnight. Silk pillowcases can help keep hair smooth, shiny, and damage-free. It’s also a good idea to sleep with a protective hairstyle like a loose braid or low bun at night.
Don’t Forget to Hydrate
Hydration is absolutely essential for healthy hair, and focusing on mineral rich fluids is key. Coconut water is a great option since it is full of minerals and electrolytes, along with lemon water. Our hair loves minerals! Orange juice, watermelon juice, and grapefruit juice are also good options because they are mineral-rich, full of vitamin C, and are powerful aromatase inhibitors. This is important because they help our bodies detox extra estrogen and hormones that can become stagnant and lead to hormonal and liver issues, and inevitably lead to hair loss. Mineral-rich bone broths that are full of amino acids like glycine, proline, and glutamine are also perfect for hair growth, and they also contain more protein to add to your daily intake.
Summer is less than a month away, and luscious, long hair is definitely going to be the trend of the season. Follow these tips to have bouncy, healthy, and revived hair all summer long!
