your guide to holistic beauty + health + lifestyle.

It was total news to me when I found out that what I was wearing to workout could negatively affect my health. It was a sad moment to learn that all of my favorite leggings and sports bras were made with plastic microfibers that are not only not great for my health, but are also not great for the environment. I guess it makes sense when you think about how our skin is our largest organ, and when we sweat, toxins can more easily absorb through our pores and into our bloodstreams. That being said; I’m not one to totally overhaul my wardrobe and throw away all of my favorite clothing items, but over the years I have been trying to invest in more conscious brands that use sustainable and breathable materials. If you’re looking to upgrade your workout wear too, The Glow Files has the guide to the best clean activewear brands for a healthier workout.

1. MATE the Label

I’m starting the list off strong with my favorite brand of all. MATE uses organic cotton for all of their workout wear, and a small percentage of spandex to allow for more stretch and support. Their matching sports bra and legging sets are so cute and comfortable, and allow for ease of movement due to the high-quality fabric and fit. I’ve worn their activewear sets for high-impact hot yoga classes, and although they don’t have moisture wicking properties like less sustainable brands, they definitely pass the sweat test.

2. Indigo Luna

Indigo Luna is a popular Australian-based brand in the yoga world with brick and mortar stores in Bali. They use only organic and natural fabrics that are better for our health and better for the environment. Their styles are very on-trend with fold-over workout shorts, V-neck workout tops with ruching, and wrap-tops that really fit the ballerina vibe that has been trending lately. Their color palette is warm and earthy, and they are known for their high-quality styles.

3. Hardtail

Hardtail is an activewear and loungewear brand that has been around forever. I remember my mom buying this brand in the late ‘90s and early 2000s, and I find so much comfort in the fact that they are still going strong. They are largely known for their classic low-rise, fold-over yoga pants in colorful tie-dye prints. Their styles are very boho-chic, and the majority of their workout clothing (including their sports bras) is made with cotton and a small amount of elastane for stretch.

4. Groceries Apparel

Groceries Apparel is another brand that really takes their commitment to conscious clothing to the next level. They use only non-toxic and PFA-free materials, and they also use toxin-free dyes by utilizing color from fruits and vegetables, hence their name. All of their clothing is made in the USA, and they pride themselves on upcycling materials that would otherwise go to waste. Their activewear is not only sustainable, but it’s also so cute with versatile colors and styles. Their tie-dye and ribbed shorts are my favorite, and their sports bras and cropped tanks are perfect for any workout.

5. PuraKai

I love this brand’s origin story, and their passion for health and our planet is so apparent in both their message and in the quality of their clothing. Founded in California by people who love the ocean and are committed to keeping it free from pollution, PuraKai activewear is made with organic cotton that is free from plastic fibers.  Their EcoFlex leggings and reversible workout tops are great for high-impact workouts since they’re made with breathable materials and the perfect amount of stretch.

6. Los Angeles Apparel

Los Angeles Apparel is one of my favorite brands for affordable and quality basics made in the USA. The majority of their clothing is made with cotton and spandex, and they are mindful about the types of dyes that they use. I love their yoga pants, cropped tees and tanks, their workout shorts, and hoodies. Their material is thick enough to be long-lasting and not see-through, but has enough give to be super comfortable to workout in. They have a wide color and style range in their clothing, so you’ll probably be filling your cart full of sustainable styles quickly.

Working out and exercising is one of the best things that we can do for our health, and if we’re going to be mindful about the impact of movement on our bodies, it makes sense to be mindful about what we are wearing when we do it. With the rise of information about harmful microplastics being everywhere in our environment, buying clothing from more conscious and clean brands is worth looking into. From one wellness girly to another, these toxin-free workout brands will keep your workout cute, comfortable, and clean.
